A STUNNING SECOND HALF performance Godwin from Henry Green Primary School saw them complete the league and cup double for a second year in succession. A brace from Ellie-Mai Morgan plus a third from skipper Abigail Asare saw the Green Lane outfit add the Ballerz League trophy to their Monteagle Shield crown – once more at the expense of closest rivals Godwin.
Earlier in the campaign, Stage One wins over Roding Hewett, Monteagle and Richard Alibon saw them sail through as group winners without conceding a goal. In the next phase, Beam and St Peter’s were put to the sword as the group table was topped once again.
Showdown
In the final round of games, George Carey, Valence, Ripple and St Peter’s again all fell by the wayside until the final game of the season, in a winner-takes-all showdown between the two finalist from the borough 5-a-side cup competition.
Whereas that final had been a closely fought affair, this time round was much more emphatic. Godwin hung on despite being overrun at times throughout a frenetic first half.
But after the break, Henry Green were on the front foot as district striker Morgan burst through three challenges to slot past Zohar Okurowe in the Godwin goal.
One became two shortly as Godwin struggled to withstand the green and white wave beseiging their goal, Morgan once again profitting from close range.
Set-pieces
The opposition’s best chances came from district captain Emily Brown’s set-pieces, with one free-kick in particular millimetres away from earning her side a foothold in the game.
But Asare’s side-foot finish from the edge of the penalty area confirmed first place for her side, and a well-deserved retention of Henry Green’s title.
