Anti-Discrimination & Equal Opportunities Policy

BARKING & DAGENHAM SCHOOLS’ Football Association (BDSFA) is responsible for setting and upholding the standards and values that apply throughout its organisation. Football belongs to, and should be enjoyed by, everyone equally.

BDSFA is committed to eliminating discrimination based on gender, sexual orientation, race, nationality, ethnic origin, colour, religion, or disability. We aim to promote and encourage equal opportunities throughout our organisation.

Equality of opportunity at BDSFA means that no one will be treated less favourably in any of our activities on the above grounds.

BDSFA will not tolerate harassment or discriminatory behaviour, whether verbal or physical. We will take appropriate action to address any such behaviour in any context in which it occurs.

BDSFA is committed to ongoing training and awareness-raising initiatives aimed at eradicating discrimination both within the organisation and more broadly within the game of football.

There may be occasions when, in the professional judgement of a teacher, a pupil’s participation in certain activities is deemed inappropriate. Schools may consult the BDSFA Committee or Local Authority staff for further guidance if necessary.

BDSFA is committed to equal treatment of all member schools and expects all teachers and adults other than teachers (AOTTs), regardless of their level or authority, to comply with the principles of this policy and the guidance provided by the Equal Opportunities Commission and the Commission for Racial Equality.

All members must comply with the provisions of the Race Relations Act 1976, Sex Discrimination Act 1986, Disability Discrimination Act 1995, and the Equality Act 2010. Schools should also refer to their own policies and those of the Local Authority.

Specifically, discrimination is prohibited in:

  • Treating any individual less favourably on the grounds of gender, colour, marital status, race, nationality, ethnic origin, religion, sexual orientation, or disability.
  • Imposing different or unfair requirements on individuals based on any of the above grounds.
  • Victimisation, harassment, or bullying.
  • Any act or omission that disadvantages a member based solely on the protected characteristics listed above.

When selecting teams, teachers should use discretion to ensure that all pupils are given appropriate opportunities to participate.

BDSFA is committed to promptly investigating any claims of discrimination. Where such behaviour is confirmed, immediate action will be taken to cease the practice, make restitution where necessary, and investigate the responsible member.

Any member found guilty of discriminatory conduct will be required to stop immediately. Such conduct is a violation of Association policy and will be dealt with in accordance with the complaints procedure.

BDSFA is committed to supporting disabled members in all aspects of their involvement. They will be treated equally in recruitment and participation, with reasonable adjustments made where necessary. Support and training will be provided as requested to help ensure full access and inclusion.
