Godwin Girls Meet England Legend Rachel Yankey

THIS YEAR’S LONDON Youth Games at the National Sports Centre in Crystal Palace saw Godwin girls achieve a highly respectable ninth place. Thirty-three schools represented their respective boroughs, with the Finnymore Road side achieving their first top half finish in five attempts.

With six minute matches and very small goals, most matches were destined to end 0-0 however Godwin topped their group thanks to a thumping 4-0 win over Southwark. District stars Layla Duffield and Emily Brown grabbed the goals, the latter netting an impressive hat-trick to take her tally to thirty-two for Godwin so far this campaign.

During the medal competition, Godwin – who didn’t concede a goal all day – needed the final game between Barnet and Islington to end 0-0 in order to progress. However, with twenty seconds remaining, Barnet took the lead and nipped in to take their place.

In the boys competition, Roding topped their group in the morning but found the going tough after lunch, finally exiting the tournament in thirteenth position.
